How Rude!

When did common courtesy go out the window? On our recent cruise, we encountered a variety of people many of which were nice, refined, well spoken and kind – on the other hand there were some people who reflected no social graces to speak of and handled themselves as self centered animals hopping in front of you in line for the elevator or not noticing the needs of others. When I was growing up I was taught to give my seat on a bus to the elderly woman with a cane, allow them to proceed in line and speak with sincerity not focusing on their disability. Is our society crumbling to a point that all that our grandparents taught has vanished. Now imagine, if you will, a clean cut individual using a scooter to assist travel in long corridors, waiting for the elevator. He pushes the button- maneuvers into position as to be able board the elevator not knowing which one will open first. The elevator lands- five people get off- six more swoop in to the remaining space and they are off. This continues for the next fifteen minutes till all the able bodied people can go up one flight when the stairs are right there. As things died down just a bit, he was making his way to the elevator while another individual held the door open for him, a woman from across the lobby ran and literally jumped over his scooter and into the elevator and three more swoop in from the side. I was shocked to see this. The fact that it was my husband in the scooter, made it hit especially close to home. Others, rather than looking him in the eyes and saying hello would noticeably gawk at the scooter admiring its shinny rims and were quite flip-id in their remarks saying -" I wish I could ride around like that" Im sure he was thinking well, I wish I could walk around all day like you. It isn't a choice people- if he could walk with ease - he would.
