Light Pours In

A stack of magazines in hand I approach Starbucks Counter at Barnes and Noble, I stop short and retreat slightly and casually reach into my giant sling purse for my digital camera. I was in awe, the light was absolutely liquid, its just pouring in. Beautifully captured as it works its way in and around all the dark wood, blocked by the silhouette of a fellow book worm, cascading onto the floor. Turning my camera on, make needed settings, and snap- I caught it- light, so elusive that it changes dramatically within just a couple minutes never to be the same again. Fortunate for me- I don't claim to be a photographer- because I would fall dreadfully short, but my purpose behind the lens is an extension of my sketchbook- which serves as a jumping off point for a painting. And while photographers work their magic with lenses, filters, graphic programs or dark room feathering my contribution comes from observation- just simply being. Coffee isn't coffee to me- its an experience, so await my Mocha and scout out the perfect place I can view the most interesting people. I lay down my magazines and sit down and thumb through a couple magazines- they call my name, coffee now at my side, I again reach into my treasure trove of hidden creative bliss and emerge with a small watercolor kit and sketchbook. Making a few little color notes and sketches of details such as fingerless gloves clutching coffee and slouched boots, a half hour ticks by generating several pages of notes, so - culture is alive and well, even at Starbucks.
