Deconstruction

Squeezed into the corner of our dining room, having morning coffee I realize the humor of the situation. We asked for this. Looked forward to it. And are paying good money for the pleasure. See, we are remodeling. The carpet that served us well for the last 10 years, now lays in large wads in the front yard along with fragments of the multicolored foam under pad. These remnants and disorder mock us from every direction.

Miscellaneous furniture from the living room is packed into spare bedroom causing me to climb over the treadmill to get the paperwork for my Nook out of the living room end table. The unfinished plywood floor and absence of furnishings in the living room generates a weird warehouse quality with strange acoustics.

Last night we gathered around the basic 13 inch TV in the bedroom, with our grilled cheese and tomato soup, subjected to watching the intermittent signal because of the storm looming outside. The simplest of tasks take planning or need rerouted when there is construction going on in your home, for instance when I took the dog to the bathroom this morning, I had to go through a series of doors through the addition, because grandmothers upright grand piano is strategically placed in front of the back door.

There are extra benefits like the country music, spotted with hillbilly comedy from a local station, echos through the house from an industrial shock resistant boom box, making me thankful for the ability to hop in the car and leave. This morning the internet is down – so our frustration cannot be limited to a single witty line on FB. The recurring sound of the a Black and Decker drill securing sub flooring every eight inches highlights the music coming from my husbands phone, while on hold with customer service department for my electronic book. All this because one day on a whim we said, “Lets put in laminate wood floors throughout the house.” This is why I am thankful I have a shop to go to – ill light a candle- put on some music – get out my paints and forget all this is going on, until tonight.
