Memphis, for Ribs-
Seven thirty Saturday morning the phone rings- it's Don, Steve's riding buddy for several years. Through the sleep in his eyes, Steve says, “Whats up man, its early.” At this point Don says, hey, you wanna get ribs with me today? Steve says, I guess, where were you thinking and why are you calling so early, I haven't even had coffee yet. “ Well, it takes a while to get there, we better get on the road if you wanna go-” “ Where , we goin-” Steve asks. “ Memphis!” Don said as if it was nothing. Steve declined this time, but the next day we saw him for coffee, we thought he didn't go- seeming it was about 8 -10 hours away, but he did- straight down and back returned about 2 am – all for the love of ribs- and the ride. Someday we should go to -Memphis, for Ribs.
Wanna go to Sturgis? On another occasion- we had just returned from a 10 day trip on our bikes touring Missouri – bags still unpacked the next morning after arriving home- Don again calls Steve and asks Steve to go to coffee- and says, there is something he wants to ask him. Steve hops on his bike, heads down to Judy's where Don asks- “ Wanna go to Sturgis”, thinking it was in a couple months or so, Steve said – “sure , when is it ?” Don said, “We would leave tomorrow morning about seven” Steve told him every logical excuse he could think of trying to talk himself out of it, I knew he wanted to go, when he told me when he returned form coffee. But after talking a few minutes he decided to through caution to the wind and go- I told him I would wash what was in his bags and repack-no big deal. And they were off- he often says it was the best trip he ever took.
There is something about taking advantage of opportunities as they come- that is so liberating.
What is an, IRON BUTT ?
At Rotary we ask a friend ,“ Where were you yesterday ?”and they simply reply," I went for a ride.” Where did you go was our next question, and he said. “Montana.” “ MONTANA, I didn't know you were planning a trip- when did you go?” Im thinking ok- that's like 12 hours from here they just got back from a week long vacation or something- " I left after breakfast yesterday." was his response. This is what one would call an iron butt.
