Resigning Control

Twilight Falls

As a child I was fascinated with stories of far away lands and closed my eyes to better formulate images. They moved , danced and undulated in ways only seen on the big screen. As a careful observer of reality and all its flaws and blessings, these images are filed away in my minds eye to be called on at another time. When creating a drawing or painting I rely on this skill to envision the subject of my painting. Routinely I stand before a blank canvas and run my hand over it – in a strange way I'm asking for permission to proceed- a kind of getting acquainted. Many times a free form abstract painting is created without regard to the finished piece. It is at this time, I look into the image as if I were lying in a field looking up at the clouds and find perceived images. They are of course a bit more complex than the occasional turtle or dragon a child might see – but received with the same delight. It is at this time, I proceed to tell a story in paint.

This is a journey I have taken before an easel many times on my own for many years, but I recently have been working with another artist Adele, in much the same way. Each of us would lay down a foundation painting and then hand it off to the other to build on what was created. Each layer changed the painting in such a way that it became entirely different. We would continue this process of adding to the work of the other, until we agreed it was complete. In this way we created a collection of paintings with a freshness that communicates a variety of emotions. These pieces range from sheer musical energy in “Syncopation”, to peaceful contemplation in, “Twilight Falls”. Ten pieces comprise the collaborative collection including a satirical piece that emerged on the canvas , “ But, what about our spawn?” communicates a love affair of two fish gone wrong.

This collaborative collection and new independent works by the artists, Annabelle Seelye Fuhr and Adele Thompson are available for viewing and purchase during the upcoming exhibit which kicks off Columbus Days. “Annabelle and Adele a Collaboration” , opens with an artist reception
