The last couple days at the studio have been very productive creating a new line of earthy jewelry incorporating found objects. The materials I use are varied including beads made of ceramic, hand carved wood, coconut, lava, stone, agate, and African trade beads to name just a few. Gathering the materials is part of the process for me which may be from recycled jewelry components or odds and ends found literally along side the road or the bottom of a junk drawer. These items or artifacts have a sort of history behind them and lend to the charm of the piece. Incorporating these elements breathes life into the piece elevating the craft of jewelry making into art you can wear.
Little Treasures- "Where did you get that" a common question
when someone asks about my jewelry. Its fun to tell them I made it with
stuff I found along side the road. I find endless delight in gathering
"treasures" usually a small gem strikes my eye in the course of the
day and sometimes my stash is depleted and I go looking. One day
last year I went for a walk along side the highway near our house and found
a sandwich container full of odds and ends destined for my resin jewelry.
Among the finds were bits of twisted wire, broken fragments of glass,
mirror and rusted sheet metal, and even a bit of asphalt too beautiful
to leave behind. Tuesday I rode my motorcycle to Rotary before work but my
tires were low because of the long cold winter, so I stopped to get my tires
aired up, that is when I found a beautifully rusted metal gasket which
is now the perfect compliment to a pendant I made today.
